  1. Recent Changes to InteliCat(tm)

  13. ** THE OLD FILE NAME DEFAULTS OF LC ARE NO LONGER USED!             **

  15. The following changes have been made in InteliCat which are addendums to
  16. what InteliCat's documentation describes:
  17.  
  18.         New Options
  19.         -----------
  20.         o       InteliCat now has options to configure how dates are
  21.                 displayed.  From the Configuration menu you may select
  22.                 the date options to set the date format as well as the
  23.                 separator.  This should make things look a little better
  24.                 for other countries that don't view dates in the typical
  25.                 format used in the USA.
  26.  
  27.                 NOTE:  At default InteliCat will detect the country (if you
  28.                 have MSDOS v3.0 or above.  For DOS versions older than 3.0
  29.                 the USA format is used at default.  You may change the
  30.                 default by editing the date options.
  31.  
  32.         o       Auto save options - InteliCat now has autosave options to
  33.                 allow you to specify whether it should automatically save
  34.                 the configuration and/or database when exiting or reading
  35.                 a new file (if changes were made to the previous one).
  36.                 At default these items are both turned on.
  37.  
  38.         o       Added an option to specify whether comments extracted from
  39.                 an archive should be put in InteliCat's keyword field instead
  40.                 of the comment field.  (Note:  You must have the option for
  41.                 extracting archive comments set for this option to work).
  42.                 This option is located on the archive options page.
  43.  
  44.         o       Added an option to the import utility to allow you to
  45.                 specify whether comments imported should be put in InteliCat's
  46.                 keyword field instead of the comment field.  (This is actually
  47.                 an option that is stored in your configuration file, but can
  48.                 only be modified from the comment import screen).

  50.  
  51. Other than those changes the following minor changes and fixes have been 
  52. added since v1.83 was released:
  53.  
  54. o  Modified InteliCat to allow the user to abort changes made since the last 
  55.    time a database was saved (autosave of the database must be off for you to
  56.    have this option though!).
  57.  
  58.    NOTE:  Comments that you modify are immediately written to disk, so the
  59.    changes you make to existing comments can't be aborted.  New comments 
  60.    you input for files that didn't have them will be aborted if you don't
  61.    save changes though.
  62.  
  63. WARNING:  If you ZAP the database the changes can't be reversed!  Once you
  64. --------
  65. confirm a ZAP, the database will be written to DISK with no records in it, 
  66. unless you have backups of both the database file and the comment database,
  67. you won't be able to undo this action.
  68.  
  69. o  Modified InteliCat to remove references to the old default files of LC.
  70.    NOTE:  Existing users should rename their configuration to IC.CFG, delete
  71.    the old configuration file, or add the following to your autoexec.bat file:
  72.  
  73.     ICCFG=LC.CFG
  74.  
  75. o  If you set up the configuration properly with your database name you don't 
  76.    really need to change from the old default of LC (if that's what you use).
  77.    Note however, that if you do choose to modify the name of your database 
  78.    that there are TWO DATABASES that must be renamed.  Please refer to the 
  79.    documentation in a section titled 'Two Files per Database' if you're not
  80.    sure how InteliCat names it's database files.
  81.  
  82. o  Fixed InteliCat to not adjust the number of files, disk, dirs, etc when a 
  83.    configuration file with a lower number is read.  Note however, that if you
  84.    read a configuration file with more files/disks/dirs configured than what
  85.    you currently have available, InteliCat will try to increase the number 
  86.    available.

  88. o  Fixed the skip input of keywords option to really work.
  89.  
  90. o  Modified the program to default to XMS instead of EMS as a first choice 
  91.    (This is done because there appear to be a number of TSR programs out
  92.    there that don't understand they are supposed to restore the state of the
  93.    resources they use to make their operation transparent to other programs.).
  94.    InteliCat's use of EMS ***REQUIRES*** that pages it maps in are not mapped
  95.    out until it tells the EMM driver to do so.  To solve the problem at
  96.    default XMS appears to be a better solution for use when possible.

  98. o  Fixed keywords to be carried over for files within an archive when 
  99.    replacing a disk.
  100.  
  101. o  Added the banner to show Switch! is active when the temp file is going 
  102.    to a disk file.
  103.  
  104. o  Added a display of the file date and the listing file date when the import
  105.    utility asks if you want to replace an existing comment/keyword.
  106.  
  107. o  Fixed the DOS Shell to restore the cursor to the way it was before the 
  108.    shell when the user invokes the shell from something other than an input
  109.    prompt.

  116. Released v1.83
  117.  
  118. Modified the archive view functions to once again use non-buffered i/o
  119. (as v1.78 used to).  This change was made because the time to expand
  120. archives (i.e. ZIP files) has doubled since v1.78 due to the overhead
  121. involved with the buffering.  The non-buffered i/o may be slower under
  122. some multi-tasking environments, but for the majority of users it will be
  123. faster.

  131. Changed InteliCat to delete usage of comments when a file is deleted (this
  132. change doesn't change most setups, but if you're short on disk space it works
  133. better than the old method of determing deleted comments when the database
  134. is read).

  136. Fixed a few bugs in the registered users upgrade utility that kept the old
  137. field width settings from being moved over when the configuration file is 
  138. formatted for v1.8+.
  139.  
  140. Modified the comment editor to issue a message when you press F10 to save
  141. & advance while on the last file.  After the message, pressing a key now 
  142. returns you to the menu.  Fixed other methods of advancing out of range when
  143. editing comments to cause a beep.
  144.  
  145. Made cosmetic changes on the report headers to show 'InteliCat'.
  146.  
  147. Fixed a bug that kept the keyword field width from being honored.
  148.  
  149. Fixed a minor bug that caused the files time stamp to be displayed wrong by
  150. 32 minutes in some cases.

  160. Due to a naming conflict, v1.8 of my program begins with a new name.  From
  161. this point forward, this program will be called InteliCat.
  162.  
  163. This version is starting with a clean version of this file as 
  164. the documenation has been completely rewritten.  In short, this version
  165. has the following enhancments over what was previously v1.78:
  166.  
  167.         EMS/XMS can be utilized allowing databases to have 32,000 files.
  168.  
  169.         Advanced selection criteria can now be specified (using logical
  170.           operators).
  171.  
  172.         A merge utility has been added to allow combining multiple databases.
  173.  
  174.         Individual files may now be deleted from the database.
  175.  
  176.         Disk names are now treated as non-case sensitive, and an option is
  177.           provided to allow you to force all disk names to upper case as
  178.           they are added to the database.  InteliCat won't accept disk names
  179.           that are unique by their case only.
  180.  
  181.         The comment entry screen has been completely reworked to allow 
  182.           easier input of comments.
  183.  
  184.         The comment import utility has been expanded to allow import of 
  185.           a greater variety of file/comment listings.
  186.  
  187.         Reworked the options input screens to provide a consistent user
  188.           interface.  (Also added several new options, and changed the 
  189.           format of the configuration file.  LCNEW - available to registered
  190.           users - will upgrade the old format configuration files to the 
  191.           new format.
  192.  
  193.         InteliCat supports startup in extended VGA/EGA modes.
  194.  
  195.         InteliCat now initializes faster on many computers.
  196.  
  197.         GIF Files are now support as ARChive types.
  198.  
  199.         4DOS descript.ion comment files can be imported automatically.

  201. Many other minor changes help round out the most significant upgrade of
  202. InteliCat to date.
  203.
